How Much Do I Pay a Nanny?
Many families opt for a nanny instead of sending their children to daycare. That’s especially true if they have more than one child that may need childcare or if their child is an infant.

Before you can decide on whether a nanny is a right choice, you’ll have to know a few things:

1. Is it a cost-effective solution for your family?
2. Will you need a nanny full-time or part-time?
3. How much does a nanny earn per hour?

With this information, you’ll have a better idea of whether a nanny makes sense for your family. Let’s take at how much nannies earn in different regions of New Zealand.

Things to Consider When Hiring a Nanny
As you start the interview process, you’ll want to keep a few considerations top of mind. For starters, you’ll want to know if your nanny will work full-time or part-time.

Additionally, you’ll want to consider the duties of the nanny. Will they help with light housework or care for the children solely?

Here are a few considerations to keep in mind:

Right to Work
You’ll want to screen nannies during the interview process to make sure they have the right to work in New Zealand. That could include:

● New Zealand or Australian citizenship
● New Zealand Residence Visa
● New Zealand Work Visa

It’s important to get this information upfront as not to waste time during the interview process for unsuitable candidates.
Understand Your Obligations

As a family hiring a nanny, you will be considered an employer. That means you’re held to standards like any business that employs workers.

Some considerations:
● Meet contract pay negotiations and don’t pay less than minimum wage
● Provide four weeks vacation
● Provide statutory public holidays
● Provide at least five sick days per annum (soon to be ten days)
● Provide a safe work environment
● Don’t deduct money from payslips unlawfully

Sign an Employment Agreement
It’s essential to have a written agreement signed before your nanny starts work. For more information about what goes into an employment agreement.
